It's a safe assumption they knew the ship was coming. They already know how to communicate with them for example -- fly into the air bubble around the ship and use loud-speakers. Very efficient.
I wanted to have little air jets come out of the ship as it was floating there, but I just couldn't get them to look right in the context. Using the little "pffft" text was a good substitute, but the air jets would have been cooler.
