When you first jump into a role playing game, you're be fighting kobols and goblins and womprats -- pathetic creatures that really aren't at all challenging. it doesn't take an experienced fighter to defeat those critters, so no hero is going to run from them. That's just how it is.
However, once you get rolling, your character gets powerful, and you start adventuring deeper and deeper into dangerous territory, the creatures you fight will become exponentially harder. That's when cowardice and strategy are required. Mostly the cowardice.
