This was yet another of those long term jokes. We knew, way back in the day that eventually Katrina would get Darkie the bird/bat. And this was the first major joke we had planned for him. Other amusing ones came about as well, but this joke wrote itself back during the big jam sessions Mab and I had that started this whole mess that I call a comic.
As for the top panel, this was a spur of the moment SoM joke that just felt so right to do. That little boy gets in a lot of trouble at that town. I feel bad for him.
