#3937: Implied Consent

This Comic's Storylines:

This is actually true: the Earth is on the outer edge of the galaxy, in one of the outer arms. Although there are other stars around us, shooting in our direction is much safer for other populated star systems than shooting in most other directions. And since Blacula already did the leg work, that seems like a win-win.

I've been struggling to really understand the logic in these last few pages. Couldn't they just point the beam at nothing? Sure there's the argument that they might inadvertently hit something without intending to, but the exact same thing could happen by pointing it at Earth too. And if they somehow know that by pointing it at Earth would only hit Earth, then couldn't they use the same technique to find a path where nothing gets hit, not even Earth?

...Maybe? I mean, it makes sense in my head but admittedly I'm not an astrophysicist. But then, neither are the heroes.

Yeah. The prostpects of hitting something while shooting through the galaxy at random are abysmally low. It's almost entirely empty. This is like being worried about hitting a pedestrian in a nearby city while firing a gun in the air in the countryside. . . Technically possible. At sectors away, any deviation will make them miss their target anyway. The beam would also have to be nigh-instantaneous FTL and not light-speed itself cause everything's in motion. Also no diffusion. I'd suggest the video 'metric paper' for some perspective on what exactly is in space.

I do get the point being made. But this is also a silly comic. Let's just let this play out.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
