The two sides of his teleportation go hand-in-hand. It's the only way I can explain how it works. If he teleported in time without being anchored in space (by the gravity of the planet itself) he's just wind up transporting back to a place in space that didn't have a planet when he went through time (since the planet would be moving on its orbit with or without him).

Planetary gravity makes sense if we're trying to justify time travel.
