The Joy of Motherhood
I happen to think vampires a pretty cool, so I've read a fair bit of vampire fiction. Issue is, there's a lot of really shitty vampire fiction out there.

I mention this because I got the idea for animalistic vampires from a fairly popular vampire series (although in that series, the vampires were animals because they were converted by the bites of multiple vampires, which fucked up the conversion magic somehow). The vampire series in question, though, deteriorated quickly into romance bullshit. This happens a lot of in vampire fiction.

"Vampires a pretty. Vampires are sexy. Vampires make great lovers. Let's make this a romance series four books in."

Gah, I hate it when that happens. Then I have to find a new series to read (and usually get rid of all the old books I have, since they're tainted by the later novels).

If you're wondering, the series was the "Anita Blake" series by Laurel K. Hamilton. I never bought a book in the series (thank gods), but the first couple were interesting (some good ideas on vampires at least before it all became "sex sex sex").

So I'm not the only one that got the dry heaves after the third book in on that series. Good to know I'm not the only one with Some sensibilities about my monsters. n,n;

I actually made it six or seven books in (mostly out of narrative momentum), but I can't say I enjoyed any past the first three or so. Once the main werewolf was introduced, I mostly tuned out. I kept hoping it would get better, but it never did.

I remember dropping the series from my reading list when the sex got to pervasive. I was sixteen. When a sixteen-year-old boy says the series has too much sex, you have problems.

It's not just the vampire novels that have a tendency to go that route about four or so books in. I've come across other series that have done that. And as a side not for M. Jack Magee.........it's not the having too much sex for a sixteen-year-old boy that is a problem (although normally that isn't possible), it's not having enough story between the sex to keep the sixteen-year-old boy interested enough to get to the next bout of sex. You just happened to be more sensitive to the lack-of-a-story than most kids. When I was sixteen I almost couldn't stand stories with graphic depictions of sex, especially if they were used more than once per 150 or so pages of novel, but that was more because I wanted to read a book for a story and not for eroticism. I haven't changed much since then, mostly just become more tolerant of sex in a story (so long as it doesn't go overboard, many a good series has been ruined by going overboard), exception being a rather broad selection and type of materials out of Japan, where they actually have managed to use the sex to enhance and improve upon the story (something I still haven't seen any non-Japanese authors pull off).

I've never thought vampires were sexy. I don't see how a dead leech is considered a thing of attraction. I totally agree about the Anita Blake series. There was no reason to make her an abject whore. Hamilton had some narratively interesting ideas, such as the vampire neanderthal, that I would have liked to have seen more explored without a whore a thon getting in the way.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
