I got the idea of the chem from Discworld. I haven't managed to find any reference to it outside of that series, although I'd assume Pratchett got the idea for the word from something in current literature.
It was a good concept (words in the head instead of just words on the forehead), so I stole it. I end up doing that a lot when it comes to Discworld.
