There are standards to be upheld. Having an evil sorcerer in town is one thing -- it lends as certain old-world charm to the village, which is good for tourism (just maybe not repeat tourism). But you have to also follow the proper standards. Don't be so public about it. Do employ an Igor.
Oh, and maybe think about buying fire insurance. The yearly "attack the sorcerer's fortress with torches and pitchforks" is a delightful holiday for the populace, but then you have to rebuild afterwards. Proper insurance is just good business.
