Eh, that moment has passed. Moving on...
To make the "stone" effect, I simply desaturated the colors on the various characters by about 50 percent. A little of the natural color (Angel's blue, in this case) shows through, but they look grey-ish enough for the effect to work. Plus, old statues (like the ancient Greek's) were actually painted, so a little color does make the sprites "seem" more authentic.
