This seems callous and wrong. I realize this. And yet, when playing in a tabletop RPG, and a battle has happened, I'm always the first to go "I loot the bodies". You can get a lot of good stuff off of corpses in an RPG.
It's no worse than in video game RPGs. They just give you the gold and items without making you feel icky about it. Same principle at play.
