One theory of parallel realities is that every choice you make causes a split in the dimensions. Whether or not EVERY choice causes this, in the specific case Darkmoon made a very important decision, and this dimension (at least in part) is the result of that choice.
Now, whetver or not everything else changed as a result of that one choice, or if it was systemic stretching back further is something we'll have to find out.
