#3505: New Arrivals

This Comic's Storylines:

We have a lot to unpack here, first and foremost the fact that we're now in the distant past which, as readers of DSWC will know, means we have to go 8-bit. This might seem a little weird for readers that only stick to CVRPG's main story since characters have gone into the past and they didn't change art style. And that's true, and I the only thing I can think to say is that the stories featuring Cassie and Jenny and their time period in CVRPG IV may not have been quite as far into the past as this comic is set. Or that I'm inconsistent. Either or.

Obviously I went 8-bit here because I found it funny and, since we're doing a victory lap of everything, revisiting ideas and exploring characters that haven't shown up in a while, doing one last hurrah in the 8-bit style seemed fitting. Plus it gave me the chance to show some characters in a style they haven't been done before, such as Shaft and Carmilla.

To that end, let's discuss their sprites. Zombie Sypha is an easy one since I just took the normal Sypha sprite from CV3 and turned it (and NES appropriate) green -- since you only get three colors for sprites on the NES I either had to color her dress green or take the white highlights of her sprite and make them green. This version looked better. Carmilla actually shows up in an NES game, CV2, but only as her demon mask. Since I at least could grab colors from them, I took a female villager sprite and recolored it to match Carmilla's NES colors. Shaft, though, was tricky since I didn't have anything in Castlevania I could easily steal and repurpose. So, instead, I stole a wizard sprite from Zelda II and recolored it. I'm super happy with that easy solution especially since it makes Shaft look real goofy. It makes me laugh very hard.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
