It's hard to know if Golem is just playing dumb or really has no clue what humans do. He lived with dwarves, of course, so he knows those guys don't go through a chrysalis phase, but maybe he really doesn't know about humans. He may have just spent the last 800 years oblivious to things.
More likely, though, he's just being a dick.
