I really just liked the idea that absolutely no one is in manning the bridge. I'm sure they all assume Gertie is handling matters but, then, is that a safe assumption to make from any angle you look at it?
Plus, as my wife pointed out, there's a real chance Gertie really did answer the call (and this isn't just a message) and is simply screwing around with the Admiral just because she can.
