I don't think I'd recognize the smell of gold - let alone from a distance - but I do know the smell of iron well enough, so gold must have its characteristic smell too.

As I understand it metals don't intrinsically have any scent, and the "smell" of metals such as copper comes from the sweat of people handing them.
