Taffeta has been around for a long while, so it's not out of bounds for the characters to have dresses made out of it. It would have been woven from silk, not rayon, so we don't have to worry about anachronism here.
I think even Katrina would see that burning a dress she's wearing is a bad idea. At the very least she'd have a lot of singed fur.
