One way to look at it is simply the sorcerer is jerking them around. They were sent to a world to defeat a demon army, but they never really found the demon army and just kind of goofed off for a bit.
The other way to look at is that the two dungeons they explored were actually the domains of the demon army, but because they turned on one of their companions and made him into a villain before they'd finished their quest they had to stay where they were and fix a problem they caused.
The later is a great justification for the storyline. The truth, though, is that I just really sucked at planning this adventure.
