Sure, it sounds like a failure, but that's just because of the way you're looking at it. From another angle it was a complete success:
Simply put, if all three treasures are required to make a king, and one of the treasures is already in your possession, under lock and key, then whatever magic (or prophesy or whatever) can't come to pass. The deed is done, even if the two other treasures are found by someone else.
