It makes sense, really. There are only a select few people in the world (in the Castlevania mythology) that can fight vampires. There are certainly more vampires to vampire hunters in the series. So why wouldn't they let their location be known, hoping that less well-trained warriors will come to the castle to become delightful little happy meals?
And, of course, most vampires can turn to mist, so easy escape if they have to...
It occurs to me, though, that Dracula never turns to mist in the series to escape. His son can, but he can't. Poor strategy.
