Were it a true adventure game, it's true that the player would probably have been left to twist. As it is, this is also a game loosely set in the Castlevania universe. As such, the rules of that world have to apply.
More specifically, getting hit while stoned will do extra damage, but also free you from being stoned. It's a convenience, but helpful in this context.
