The stripes on the character's uniforms do correspond to proper ranks, I just never bother explaining them. Three stripes is Ensign just because I already had captains, commanders, lt. commanders and lieutenants, and the lt. commanders were Claypool and Cynthia, both with three stripes and a star. Three stripes had to be one step down from there, so it was just logical for that to be Ensigns. Not that anything in my universe is ever that logical.

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...
