Will-o-wisps are technically guides of swamps and damp forests. They're probably just swamp gas and moonlight, but the myth caught on. So here they are.

You're correct, they're not traditionally guides, except in the sense that they would "guide" you off the safe trails and deep into the swamp until you were hopelessly lost. Although wikipedia tells me there were some stories where they would instead lead those bold enough to chase them to find treasure.

This is Darkmoon we're talking about, if they occasionally lead him to treasure they're good little pixies that guide lost travelers.
