#2496: Earth As We Know It

This Comic's Storylines:

So we're doing a small series of world building strips. As you probably know if you're been reading this comic for any length of time, I really like my strips numbers to line up at certain points and times. I'm anal retentive like that. This has been complicated by doing the comic as "issues" now with the soft-reboot -- my page numbers and strip numbers have to, somehow, line up in some capacity. So, bonus strips to make stuff line up.

So there's Earth. I tried to put clouds on, but they looked like shit, so they didn't happen. I did go for a different view than you normally see from Americans -- the Earth is showing us her "backside" (quite a nice rump she's got, eh?). Africa and Asia to be exact, with just a hint of Europe.

We'll discuss the Terran feder-whataver soon...

World building? That's Earth, you didn't build that. Nice try.

Earth as a backwater? I can't really buy it. Even if we didn't develop techniques to get at deeper ores, it would still make for a great agri/hive world. Something major must also have happened for the red sea to no longer open up to the Indian Ocean. And for Cyprus to have a land route to Annatolia? WTF!? You said this was centuries right?

Here's the thing... And excuse my opinion here if it irks somebody but... Once all/most of the people Left the planet, reasonably speaking ol Momma Nature would kick up her heels and get herself all back in order again. It's only because we keep fiddling with things that the planet gets all dinged out of whack. With out us here to swing things one way or another, the planet would get back into its groove like before we were around. Ya know, weird critters suddenly crawling around on two legs and losing all their hair until they had to go hunt something just to warm up again through the ice ages. ;1

Oh, you are absolutely correct -- mother nature would get back to work rebuilding herself. But all those ores and fuels and everything else we've used up over the years? Those are gone. By and large we aren't getting those back. It'll be a very pretty forest at a certain point, but we would never be able to rebuild from scratch if we needed to (nor would it make a great colony world for new settlers).

Except the only ores and fuels that have actually been "used up" are those that have left the atmosphere in one way or another (and fuels for fission) Everything else has simply been processed and transformed, and if it can be transformed in one direction, it can be transformed back, albeit over a very long period of time. Even The energy removed via exothermic reactions can be renewed from outside sources through endothermic processes.

I don't think that's how it works, though the chemistry behind the creation of compounds and alloys makes it so that once an ore or resource is fused into the compound it's all but impossible to get it back to it's original form. Sure, some can be recycled, but much of what we've used up is just used up. And that doesn't even take into account the things we've done to the planet that would take more than 800 years (or several millennia) to correct. Simply: why stick around here when there are other planets that wouldn't take nearly the amount of effort this one would?

I love DM in the background. Y'know, I'm not a big fan of the current artstyle, but I starting think of it as the same quality of graphics as old 3D games, like Silent Hill of Ocarina of Time, had, following up from the pixel artstyle. So it's kinda like an evolution of video game graphics in a thematic way.

Exactly what I'm going for. I'm hoping over time my art will improve so that there will be generational shifts between "sequels" (we shall see), but the whole point was to emulate that style-shift as if these comics really were video games.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
