And here's my explanation for why Darkmoon doesn't have his shield. This is also a very Darkmoon bit of logic, to be sure.
Never count on Darkmoon to stay on topic. He's got his own style, and while we can all argue about its merits, he has managed to survive this long doing his thing.

But... wait... he used the shield earlier in this story arc. Just once, sure, against one of sorceress’ spells. Even talked about how he got it from Raye and had it lacquered red to fit his style. And got hit from behind when he turned around to talk about it because he’s a terrific dumbass that forgets they work best pointed toward the hazard.

Well, sure... although that's in part because I like to keep all my sprites, and their props, at the proper SNES (15-color) palettes. But then Darkmoon is neither consistent, nor has even ever shown an interesting updating his fashion sense. Perhaps he just didn't like how the shield contrasted with the lines of his outfit?
