As we can see, Alexander has a whip-like appendage on his right arm. Astute readers will note that his sprites are actually direction-specific, meaning his metal arm is always on his right side. In this respect he's like Link and Samus, two other characters with side-specific sprite sheets.
Other heroes, like Alec for example, aren't side-specific, so they'll attack and defend with opposite sides depending on which way they are facing. While I could, in theory, make every sprite side-specific, I'll be honest with the the fact that that's too much effort.
