Metroid villains seems to be most susceptible when you shove missiles down their throat. They have a predilection for swallowing things they shouldn't, like a five year old with a collection of buttons.
It is impressive that Darkmoon would risk himself like that, though. He's right, being stuck as a bat has really changed him (how ever temporary that may be).
