I think I read some fantasy novel at some point where God and Devil worked out the whole Heaven and Hell thing because humans wanted it, and God just let it happen. Peace between the two realms could have been declared at any point, but the humans wanted a place where they could be punished for their misdeeds.
it makes humans sound like masochistic subs, but then, if Heaven and Hell don't exist and humans really did write all the stuff in the Bible (and then took to believing it, after that), then they really ARE masochistic subs. Huh.
