#576: Spells and Counter Spells

Counter-magic is not something you see in most RPGs. Really, aside from "magic wall" (an all purpose spell that deflects whatever is cast back at the caster), counter-magic is pretty well unheard of in the RPG world.
That said, you can find it in other games, such as Magic the Gathering (with the Magic Wards and Circles of Protection). I like the concept of it (obviously, since we're having a lengthy magic duel using counter magics), and I like the fact that CVRPG can do something different from the normal RPG combat... but I also acknowledge that if I was following proper video game RPG rules, they shouldn't allowed to do it.
Maybe it's a good thing I'm ignoring normal RPG rules here.

Actually, at least one Star Ocean title did have a similar system, although here both people would've been nailed for the combined power of those fireballs, ouch. Instead that games system used the idea of opposing elements weakening or even neutralizing each other, thus it didn't have any non-elemental spells as everything had an opposite. With 12 elements this gave them a lot to play with.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
