Presumably there would have been some item that the player should have found before this that could have helped him past the enemy. He could kill it from afar, with magic or with Bucky's help, but plainly that is not the best solution.
A few games have done this. I remember in King's Quest there were two ways up into a tall tower, and each was worth a different amount of points. Something similar is going on here.
Of course, maybe Bucky is the only solution and the narrator is just fucking with the player. I wouldn't put it past him.
