I, personally, have no interest in baseball, so I don't really know, year to year, if the Cubs are winning or losing. It's just expected that the Cubs will lose (because they always lose). That's one of the great constants of the universe.
Now, normally I'd chalk it up to an easy, lazy reference to point out that the Cubs are losing, but it seems to work here. I like it just for the sake of the fact that I never actually make baseball jokes, so one once is probably acceptable.
