#589: Training

This Comic's Cast:

From all I can gather, collecting pokemon and getting badges is the whole of what you do in that series. It's a simple plot, and certainly the gameplay is the jewel of that series, but it's not a storyline Blacula has any interest in. He wants to rule Romania, and while badges may look pretty, he's not going to wear them on his cape.

Well, you're kinda right. The badge system is definitely used to progress things, but each game has it's own storyline, usually revolving around stopping the evil actions of some organized crime syndicate...in spite of the fact that you're only ten years old. Yeah, the series has a few eyebrow raising flaws. Like the fact that ten year olds are somehow more useful to have around than police... Though that's just the main series. The offshoots like Pokemon ranger and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon have concepts that have nothing to do at all with gym badges. Still, in broad scope, you have the basic idea.

From the third generation of games on, the main storyline, besides getting the badges (which give you the right to use certain moves outside of battle like Cut [Tree] and Surf), tends to consist of a misguided Team (There's been Rocket, Magma, Aqua, Galactic, Plasma, and a couple others) trying to awaken a major legendary Pokemon to unleash its power upon the land. Needless to say, the PC comes along, wipes the floor with them, and then nabs the Legendary with the conveniently obtained Master Ball hidden in the dungeon right before the fight with the Legend. You know, it would be funny to see Blacula clash with Team Rocket over something like "Stealing Pokemon? That's our schtick!"

... well... he could always wear the badges on a sash UNDER his cape...

And if you don't have the badge to do use some of those moves outside of battle it restricts where you can travel to. The Badges are important, but ever since the third gen games they've almost been a secondary aspect.

When evil spreads across the land, and darkness rises and the monsters roam. When the creatures of the night make beautiful music, and the things that go bump in the night go bump with greater enthusiasm. When the world is in peril and is in need of a hero...

These guys are, sadly, the best the world can hope for. These are the adventures of the heroes of CVRPG. They mean well, they try hard, and occasionally they do the impossible...

They actually do something heroic.
