It's a vague breaking of the fourth wall, except, of course, the way this comic is being told there really isn't a fourth wall. The narrator is an active character, so it's not like everyone involved isn't fully aware they're in a game.
For those that aren't aware, the sprites used to make up a background, such as one of the towns, collect together in a set, and we would call that a "tileset".
