I believe the scientist was Archimedes (prolly spelled wrong of course). I haven't had to think of his name since Elementary school. Damn, that was a while ago...
The original experiment I think was for him to prove that a crown made for a king was actually not made with as much gold as it was supposed to. So, in a bath, he realized he displaced the water. I guess there was much naked running around and water everywhere, and in the end, he proved the power of displacement... And the usefulness of bath towels.
