It's parallel universes so, of course, the two characters have lead parallel lives. One could argue that the two meeting each other and interacting influenced each other to the point that they would suddenly no longer lead parallel lives, but then since each one met the other, it could also be that their new directions are, once again, parallel. To a point, anyway.
