Well, this might explain why the bird-bears never found the statue. They're incapable of actually seeing areas without trees. Wide, open clearings are beyond their understanding. I've actually read about things like this, where groups that have lived in flatland their whole lives have trouble understanding mountains. This would be like that. Actually not a bad place for Evil Katrina to hide a statue, now that I think about it.
