Darkmoon's fears are well founded. He got stuck as a bat for a whole stretch of comics, and while he can not apparently control it, it makes sense that he doesn't entirely trust it.
Also worth noting that the pearl (or whatever) that he got that gave him control over his bat form didn't restore all his vampire powers. It was a very limited-use kind of item.
Of course, this comic also helps to remind readers (that may have forgotten) that yes, Darkmoon can turn into a bat at will.
