When all else fails, dress your main character up as a woman. Cloud did it in Final Fantasy 7 and it totally worked out for him. Besides, then you give the ladies a little something... at least, I think that's how it works. To be honest, I don't know who'd actually be turned on by a dude that looks rather effeminate dressing up like a chick, but I'm sure there's a fetish out there somewhere for it.
