Although "kill anything that moves" and "steal anything that isn't nailed down" are the two rules of gaming, the third unofficial rule is "explore everywhere". This is usually a good idea since you never know what may be lurking (and useful) just around the corner.
Now, sure, there are some games where there is just too much to explore on your first pass and the only reason to go everywhere is because you can. Other times some regions are just too difficult to explore the first time you gain access. But, by and large this bit of advise applies. Explore!
