Actually the plan was always to eventually give Darkmoon a shield. That's actually why it's yellow -- Darkmoon has a little yellow on his sprites, and I used that as a basis for the shield since it works as a very nice accent color.
Not that he uses the shield very much. Sure, it's good for a one-on-one battle, but when you've got multiple opponents from multiple directions, nothing beats running.
