From everything I've read, being a monarch is very expensive -- you have to keep up with the lifestyle just to maintain the public's expectations of you. The clothing isn't cheap, the upkeep of the lands isn't cheap, and it's just so much work.
From what I heard, the fountains at Versailles, for example, would bankrupt France if they were left on all the time. And that's just the fountains -- not any other part of the palace grounds. Figure that out!
