In Super Castlevania IV, Dracula would summon lightning bolts that would strike down from the ceiling. They did huge amounts of damage -- I think Simon could only take four hits before dying (and that's assuming he wasn't hit by anything else in the battle).
For a guy who usually only fights heroes one-on-one, Dracula is doing a commendable jobs in this battle.
